"We see a country transforming its system of higher education to meet the demands of the modern world, with institutions like the new Law Factory at Novgorod University, and the New Economic School in Moscow." William Jefferson Clinton, President of the United States of America, from remarks to the Russian Duma, June 5, 2000
NES was established in 1992 through the joint efforts of Academician Valery Makarov (CEMI RAS, Russia) and Gur Ofer (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel). NES is a genuinely cooperative effort between Russian and Western economists. Over one hundred and ten visiting professors from the best universities worldwide have taught at NES and helped to develop the current curriculum.
NES is the only Russian institute of higher education that has managed to reverse "brain drain". NES has attracted its graduates to teach and conduct research upon successful completion of their Western PhDs., including three full time assistant professors.
More than 250 students have been awarded the degree of Master of Arts in Economics
from NES.
Nearly half of all NES graduates are currently enrolled in the best economics PhD programs in the US, Western Europe, Australia and Canada, including Harvard, MIT, Chicago, Northwestern, Berkeley, Yale, Michigan, UPenn, and top business schools, including Stanford, Chicago, Wharton, Kellogg, Harvard, and Sloan. An indication of NES alumni qualifications is the variety of placement in the public and private job markets. NES alumni are working in the Russian government and in the private sector, including employment in the Big Five. NES's Research Center opened in 1995 and has completed 32 research projects on various topics related to the transition from a planned to a market economy. Thus far, 19 working papers and 36 Best Student papers have been published through the Research Center.
NES's Outreach Center activities began in 1998 through the delivery of workshops for instructors from provincial universities throughout the Russian Federation. Thus far, more than 270 scholars from the regions outside Moscow have participated in one or more workshops. Master of Arts Program in Economics
"In my long teaching experience at the Hebrew University and at top American Universities I can not recall enjoying teaching more than at NES. The students usually have a degree in mathematics or in other field of the science, which facilitates teaching the advanced courses. The teaching assistants are on a high level, which you usually do not encounter in other universities". Professor Nissan Liviatan, Hebrew University The program of study at NES is based on the first two-years of study in leading PhD programs in Western universities. This Western-style graduate program is supported by the NES Research Center, where second year students participate in research projects, and write their Master's theses under the supervision of and in close cooperation with leading Russian and Western scholars.
When I studied at NES and visited it several times afterwards,
I saw that NES was the only hope for creating a contemporary institution of economic
education and research in Russia. I decided that it must be extremely interesting and rewarding
to participate in such an important endeavor. I expect that this high purpose, combined with good memories from
the time of my being a student here, can give so much enjoyment and satisfaction. Stas Anatoliev, Graduate of NES of 1995,
Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin, Madison. Applied Track. NES's International Advisory Board has approved
the introduction of more applied courses starting during the 2000-2001 academic year. The introduction of such courses
enables NES to launch a Master's program in Applied Economics by 2002 that meets the demand for professional economists
who work outside of the academy. English Language. English is the working language of the international
economics community; hence, NES students have to demonstrate English proficiency. The first academic year starts with
a preparatory intensive course, devoted to listening comprehension, note taking, oral skills and specific economic
vocabulary development. During three modules of the first year students undertake four academic hours per week in English
classes. The focus is on written, oral communication and presentation skills for academic purposes.
Alumni. All of NES's top students have been recruited during their second year of studies and before graduation
for employment and for the continuation of their studies in PhD programs. Some graduates have postponed their applications
to PhD programs in order to accept well-paying jobs in the private sector in Russia. The quality of the students has
been demonstrated by the success of graduates in obtaining admission and full fellowships for doctorate training in the
top economics departments in the United States, Europe, and Australia. NES is proud of its graduates who have been awarded
PhDs from MIT, Harvard, Tilburg University, Indiana, Manchester, UPenn, Wisconsin-Madison and Australian National University,
and who are now employed in academia. The remaining NES alumni have entered the work force and are already contributing
to the region's economic reforms. They work as teachers in universities, and as economists and analysts in Russian
Government Ministries, the Central Bank, research institutes, international and multinational organizations,
and in major banks, investment, consulting and manufacturing companies. An Alumni Organization had been established
to follow and support NES graduates and also to continue the NES community after formal studies are completed.
